Pankaj Chaudhary Appointed BJP Uttar Pradesh President, Ending Months of Speculation
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday appointed Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary as its new Uttar Pradesh president, ending months of speculation over the key organisational post. Chaudhary is the 15th president of the party in the state and the fourth leader from the Kurmi community to hold the position.
The nomination ceremony took place at the BJP state headquarters in Lucknow during the party’s “Sangathan Parv”, attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and senior party leaders. Chaudhary had filed his nomination on Saturday as the sole candidate, making his elevation a formality.
Several names had been under consideration by the state and central leadership, but the BJP ultimately chose Chaudhary, a seven-time Member of Parliament from Maharajganj and a prominent OBC leader from eastern Uttar Pradesh, reflecting the party’s strategic electoral considerations.
Who is Pankaj Chaudhary: 6 Key Points
-
OBC Kurmi Leader: Chaudhary, 61, hails from the influential Kurmi community, one of eastern Uttar Pradesh’s dominant Other Backward Class groups.
-
Strategic Appointment: The party’s leadership appears to have shifted focus from 2022, when a Jat leader from western UP was appointed amid farmers’ protests. Chaudhary’s elevation is seen as addressing BJP’s electoral setbacks in eastern UP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and in preparation for the 2027 assembly elections and the upcoming three-tier panchayat polls.
-
Political Journey: An alumnus of Gorakhpur University, Chaudhary began his political career in local politics, winning the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation election in 1989 and later serving as deputy mayor. He has defeated prominent leaders such as Hari Shankar Tiwari, Virendra Shahi, Akhilesh Singh, and Harshvardhan Singh.
-
Current Role: He currently serves as Minister of State for Finance in the Modi government and has built a long career marked by repeated electoral victories.
-
Closeness to PM Modi: Chaudhary is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the centenary celebrations of the Gita Press in Gorakhpur on July 7, 2023, Modi made an unscheduled visit to Chaudhary’s residence, walking from his vehicle along a narrow lane accompanied by Governor Anandiben Patel and CM Yogi Adityanath.
-
Succession: He succeeds Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, a senior Jat leader from western UP, who was appointed state BJP president in August 2022 during the farmers’ protests against the Centre’s now-repealed farm laws.
Pankaj Chaudhary’s appointment signals the BJP’s renewed focus on eastern Uttar Pradesh and OBC representation ahead of the state’s crucial electoral battles.
