India united in grief on Thursday following the passing of Shivraj Patil, one of the nation’s most respected political figures whose public life spanned several decades and some of the highest constitutional offices. The 90-year-old veteran leader died at his residence in Latur after prolonged illness, leaving behind a profound legacy of parliamentary dignity, administrative experience, and unwavering commitment to public service.

Condolences Pour In From Across the Political Spectrum

Leaders from all parties expressed grief over Patil’s demise, reflecting the widespread respect he commanded.

President Droupadi Murmu led the tributes, calling Patil a “prominent public figure” who served India with distinction in multiple roles — from Lok Sabha Speaker and Union Minister to Governor and long-serving Member of Parliament. She conveyed her condolences to his family, admirers, and supporters, noting the significant void his death leaves in Indian public life.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered Patil with warmth, highlighting his vast experience as an MLA, MP, and Speaker of both the Maharashtra Assembly and the Lok Sabha.
“Saddened by the passing of Shri Shivraj Patil Ji… He was passionate about contributing to society’s welfare. I had many interactions with him over the years, the most recent just a few months ago,” the Prime Minister wrote, extending condolences to the bereaved family.

Opposition Leaders Recall Legacy of Integrity and Grace

Across party lines, senior opposition leaders echoed the sentiment of loss.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi described the news as “extremely heartbreaking,” calling Patil’s death an “irreparable loss” to the Congress party. He highlighted Patil’s lifelong commitment to principled politics and public service.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge remembered Patil as a “statesman of great dignity” who upheld democratic institutions with grace and integrity. He shared memories of their long association and said Patil’s demise marks a profound loss for the party and the nation.

Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, a close colleague for over four decades, called Patil a “family friend for over 45 years.” Azad described him as “honest, soft-spoken and deeply dignified,” adding that the loss was “immense.”
