BCCI Rules Out Immediate Action on Gambhir After India’s Latest Test Whitewash, Says Team in ‘Transition Phase’
A day after head coach Gautam Gambhir said his future rests with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the board has clarified that no immediate changes will be made to the coaching staff or playing group despite India’s second home Test whitewash in 12 months.
A senior BCCI official told The Indian Express that the board will not take any decision on Gambhir before the upcoming World Cups, stressing that the team is undergoing a transition. “We will not take any decision on him as the World Cup is around the corner… there won’t be any knee-jerk action,” the official said, noting Gambhir’s contract runs until the 2027 World Cup.
Gambhir, addressing the media after the defeat in Guwahati, reiterated that Indian cricket—not the coach—is paramount, pointing to successes earlier in his tenure, including the Champions Trophy win, a drawn England Test series and an Asia Cup title.
India’s 2–0 loss to South Africa is their third Test series defeat under Gambhir, following last year’s 3–0 loss to New Zealand at home and a setback in Australia. Aside from wins against Bangladesh and the West Indies, India have struggled, drawing increasing scrutiny over selection calls, tactics and the team’s inability to post competitive totals.
Much criticism has focused on batting collapses and strategic decisions such as Washington Sundar’s reshuffled batting position and spin-friendly pitches that yielded no centuries in the series.
Gambhir accepted responsibility for the team’s failures, saying, “Everyone in that dressing room—and it starts with me—is accountable.”
The BCCI is expected to consult selectors and team management after the South Africa tour concludes, but officials indicated that major personnel changes are unlikely in the short term.
