Sydney Sweeney’s Christy Sets Unwanted Box Office Record: 92% Drop, $0 Overseas Earnings

Actor Sydney Sweeney’s difficult box-office streak continues with her latest release, Christy. The biographical drama on boxer Christy Martin has opened to lukewarm reviews and disastrous earnings, and any hope of a second-weekend recovery has now evaporated. The film has recorded one of the steepest second-week drops in Hollywood history and has been virtually wiped out from overseas markets.

Christy Box Office Collection

According to Box Office Mojo, Christy debuted with a domestic opening of just $1.3 million, among the weakest ever for a wide Hollywood release. Matters worsened in the second weekend, with collections plunging 92% to a mere $108,000. As of November 20, the film’s total domestic haul stands at a disappointing $1.9 million.

Sydney Sweeney Film Draws Blank Overseas

The film has performed even more poorly outside North America. Christy managed just $14,000 internationally during its opening weekend, and was reportedly pulled from most overseas theatres by Monday. With zero earnings in its second weekend, its international total remains unchanged.
The global gross is still under $2 million, and with daily revenue now below $20,000, the film is almost certain to conclude its run with a worldwide total under that mark — a devastating outcome for a production budgeted at over $15 million.

About Christy

Directed by David Michôd, the film chronicles the rise of former professional boxer Christy Martin, who dominated U.S. women’s boxing in the 1990s before surviving an attempt on her life by her husband-turned-trainer. Sydney Sweeney gained over 40 pounds and underwent rigorous boxing training for the role. The cast also includes Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman.
