A 19-year-old youth has been booked for attempted murder after he allegedly shot a 17-year-old girl at close range in Ballabgarh’s Shyam Colony, Faridabad, on Monday evening, police said.

The Class 12 student was returning home from a private library when the accused opened fire, leaving her with bullet and splinter injuries on her left forearm and shoulder. She is admitted to a private hospital and is said to be stable.

According to police, the accused fled on a motorcycle after throwing away his country-made pistol at the spot. Multiple teams have been formed to trace him.

Inspector Shamsher Singh, SHO of City Ballabgarh police station, said the incident took place between 5 pm and 5.30 pm.

“In her statement, the girl said she had known the accused for about a year as he also came to the same library. She stopped talking to him two weeks ago, which appears to have angered him,” Singh said.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the accused attempting to shoot her in the head at close range but missing. “She survived by sheer luck,” the SHO added.

Police said the accused had been waiting outside the library for the girl. The pistol used in the attack was recovered from the spot.

An FIR under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered at City Ballabgarh police station.
