Shreyas Iyer Admitted to ICU After Internal Bleeding, Spleen Laceration: ‘Injury Could Have Been Fatal’
Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney and moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering internal bleeding from a rib injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia.
Iyer injured his left rib cage while taking a spectacular catch to dismiss Alex Carey, sprinting back from backward point. Shortly after returning to the dressing room, he experienced severe pain and was rushed to a hospital.
The BCCI confirmed in a statement that scans revealed a laceration injury to the spleen, adding that Iyer is medically stable and recovering under close supervision.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well,” the board said.
A PTI report added that Iyer remains in the ICU after doctors detected internal bleeding.
“He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding,” a source told PTI, adding that the team doctor and physio acted swiftly after noticing irregular readings.
While Iyer was initially expected to be out of action for three weeks, his recovery timeline may now be extended.
The 30-year-old batter, who was serving as vice-captain on the tour, had recently found form with a gritty half-century in Adelaide. However, his career has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries over the past year — including a back issue that led to surgery and a six-month break from red-ball cricket.
For now, Iyer remains under close medical observation in Sydney, with BCCI officials saying his condition is stable but recovery will be gradual.
