Sushant Singh Rajput’s Family to Challenge CBI Closure Report, Calls It “Flimsy and Incomplete”

The family of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput has decided to legally contest the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report on his 2020 death, describing it as “incomplete” and “flimsy.”

The closure report had concluded that there was no evidence to suggest that Rajput was confined, threatened, or that any wrongdoing was committed by actor Rhea Chakraborty or others accused in the case. It also stated there was no proof of embezzlement of his funds or possessions by Rhea.

Why the Family Rejects the Closure Report
Rajput’s family and their lawyer, Advocate Varun Singh, have strongly rejected the findings, calling the report a “superficial exercise.” Singh said, “If CBI really wanted to come out with the truth, it would have submitted all supporting case documents—including chats, technical records, witness statements, and medical records—along with the final report. This has not been done. We will file a protest petition against this closure report, which is based on a shoddy investigation.”

The family also highlighted gaps in the investigation, noting the absence of key evidence such as bank statements and digital data to support the CBI’s claims regarding embezzlement. “Simply saying Sushant Singh’s account was not used to take out funds is not enough. The CBI should have provided bank statements to substantiate its claim. This is a flimsy report that will not stand in court,” Singh added.

Key Findings of the CBI Closure Report
The CBI submitted two closure reports in March 2025—one for the case filed by Rajput’s father, KK Singh, in Patna alleging that Rhea and her family drove Sushant to suicide and misused his finances, and another regarding Rhea’s counter-case against Rajput’s sisters in Mumbai.

The report stated that Sushant committed suicide and that none of the accused, including Rhea and her brother Showik, had lived with or visited him between June 8 and June 14, 2020, the day he was found hanging in his Bandra flat. Witnesses confirmed minimal or no contact during this period, and no evidence emerged showing any coercion or undue influence by the accused.

On allegations of theft or embezzlement, the CBI noted that Rhea only took personal gifts given to her by Sushant, including an Apple laptop and wristwatch. The actor’s finances were managed by his chartered accountant and lawyer, and expenditures on Rhea—including a 2019 European trip—were made at his own instruction. The report concluded that there was no evidence of deception or inducement in any transfer of property.

Next Steps
A Patna court is scheduled to hear the matter concerning the closure report on December 20.
