Trump Says List of ‘Democrat Programs’ to Be Cut Coming Friday as Shutdown Drags Into Third Week
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration would release a list on Friday detailing “Democrat programs” that will be shut down permanently as a result of the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, did not specify which programs were on the chopping block but suggested the closures would not be temporary.
Meanwhile, the Senate failed for the eighth time to advance a House-approved bill that would end the shutdown and fund the government through November 21. The measure received a 49–45 vote, falling short of the 60 votes required in the 100-member chamber controlled by Republicans.
The shutdown, now entering its third week, has deepened partisan tensions in Washington as Republicans and Democrats continue to trade blame over the impasse.
“Only Democrats have made demands — and very expensive ones — in return for voting to reopen the government,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said during a floor speech on Tuesday.
Senate Democrats have tied their support for a temporary funding bill to efforts to secure health care reforms. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, who represents thousands of furloughed federal workers and military personnel, told NPR’s Morning Edition that resolving the standoff hinges on Trump’s direct involvement.
“If the president engages, we can solve this in 48 hours,” Kaine said.
With many federal employees facing the possibility of missing paychecks, the administration has said it plans to redirect funds to ensure uninterrupted pay for military personnel.
Thune also blocked a Democratic proposal that would have reopened the government with short-term funding while including a provision to make a federal health care tax credit permanent — a measure Republicans oppose.
