Israel Says It Intercepted Missile Fired from Yemen
The Israeli military said on Sunday that it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, where Iran-backed Houthi rebels have frequently fired projectiles in what they call retaliation for Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
“Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the IAF,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement, referring to the Israeli Air Force. “Sirens were sounded in accordance with protocol,” it added.
The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have repeatedly targeted Israel with missiles and drones, most of which are intercepted before reaching Israeli territory.
However, in September, a drone attack claimed by the group managed to breach Israel’s air defenses, injuring 22 people in the Red Sea resort city of Eilat.
In response, Israel carried out airstrikes on what it described as Houthi-linked sites in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 170, according to Houthi officials.
