Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a “warm and reassuring” conversation with Nepal’s newly appointed interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, expressing deep condolences for the recent loss of lives in the country.

In a post on X, PM Modi said he reaffirmed India’s “steadfast support” to Nepal during this critical period and extended greetings on the occasion of Nepal’s National Day.

“Had a warm conversation with Mrs Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow,” he wrote.

The discussion comes after violent protests erupted across Nepal, particularly in Kathmandu, on September 8–9. Demonstrations toppled the government led by former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and led to the formation of a new interim government under former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. During the protests, several political leaders’ residences, government buildings, business establishments, and shopping complexes were set on fire.

Normalcy has largely returned to Kathmandu, with pedestrians and vehicles seen moving freely across the capital.

Nepal Observes National Day of Mourning
The Nepal Cabinet on Tuesday declared September 17 as a public holiday and announced plans to build a ‘Gen-Z Memorial Park’ in memory of those who lost their lives during the protests. Prime Minister Karki also confirmed that the victims of the demonstrations would be declared “martyrs.”
