Film Producers Threaten Legal Action Against Influencers for Sabotaging Movies

The Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) has raised concerns over certain social media influencers who allegedly post negative film reviews to pressure producers for payments. The body, which represents over 375 leading film and TV producers, said it is seeking legal counsel to explore remedies under civil and criminal law.

IFTPC said it has observed “an alarming trend where influencers threaten to release disparaging reviews or reaction videos of films, series, and other content unless producers meet their demands,” describing the practice as a form of extortion. The organization added that these actions are intended to sabotage a project’s reception and commercial success.

The council clarified it is not against freedom of speech, and welcomes genuine, constructive criticism. However, it stressed that “acts of extortion by some unscrupulous individuals go far beyond legitimate reviewing and pose a grave threat to the creative and economic health of the Indian film industry.”

The rise of digital platforms and social media over the last decade has expanded the pool of film reviewers beyond traditional media, with YouTubers and influencers now reaching millions of viewers with their analyses of films, trailers, and songs.
