Mitchell Starc Quits T20 Internationals Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Australia’s veteran left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20 internationals, just months ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Starc, who turns 36 in January, said the decision allows him to extend his career in Test and ODI cricket, targeting the upcoming India tour, the Ashes, and the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

“Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority,” Starc said. “Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes, and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh and at my best for those campaigns.”

Starc departs as Australia’s most successful fast bowler in T20Is, with 79 wickets, second only to leg-spinner Adam Zampa (130) among Australian bowlers. He was a key figure in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup triumph, delivering crucial breakthroughs and dominating death overs.

His retirement continues a trend among Australia’s senior players stepping back from white-ball formats, following retirements or exits by David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis from ODIs. Despite this, Starc remains active in domestic T20 leagues, including the IPL, while maintaining his form in Test cricket, where he claimed his 400th wicket in his 100th Test earlier this year.

“Starc was integral to the 2021 World Cup-winning side and had a great skill for blowing games open with his wicket-taking ability,” said national selector George Bailey. Australia now faces the challenge of rebuilding its T20 attack ahead of the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next February.
