Amit Shah on Dhankhar’s Resignation: ‘Don’t Stretch It Too Much’

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday dismissed speculation over Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation as Vice President, urging that the matter not be “stretched too much.”

“Dhankhar ji was sitting on a constitutional post and during his tenure, he did good work according to the Constitution. He has resigned due to his personal health problem. One should not try to stretch it too much and find something,” Shah told ANI.

Shah’s remarks come just days ahead of the Vice President polls, scheduled for September 9.

Dhankhar resigned last month citing health reasons, a move that triggered political buzz. Reports suggested differences over the impeachment notice of Justice Yashwant Varma and the Centre’s delayed response to his resignation announcement added to speculation.

The Opposition has also sought to corner the government over the development. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned why Dhankhar had “gone silent,” hinting at a “big story” behind the resignation.

With Dhankhar stepping down, the Vice President’s post fell vacant. Elections will be held next month, with the NDA fielding Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan and the Opposition backing former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy.
