Tennis great Roger Federer has become the seventh athlete in history to reach billionaire status, according to Forbes. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who retired in 2022, is now worth an estimated $1.1 billion, boosted by his minority stake in Swiss sportswear brand On.

Federer earned more than $1 billion off the court during his 24-year career and was the world’s highest-paid tennis player for 16 consecutive seasons — despite collecting less prize money ($131 million) than rivals Novak Djokovic ($189 million) and Rafael Nadal ($135 million). In 2020, while sidelined by injury, he still topped all athletes with $106.3 million in pre-tax earnings.

Federer is only the second tennis player to join the billionaire ranks after Romanian Ion Țiriac, who built his fortune through investments. Other athletes in the club include Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, LeBron James, Tiger Woods, and Junior Bridgeman.

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz remained the highest-paid active tennis player for the second straight year, earning $48.3 million in the past 12 months. Jannik Sinner, the current world No. 1, followed with $47.3 million, nearly doubling his previous year’s earnings. Coco Gauff ranked third with $37.2 million, making her the sport’s top-earning woman and marking the first time since 2010 that all top three earners are under 30.
