Pentagon Restricts Ukraine’s Use of US Long-Range Missiles Inside Russia

The Pentagon has been blocking Ukraine from using US-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to strike targets inside Russia, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing US officials.

Reuters could not independently verify the report.

The disclosure comes as President Donald Trump grows increasingly frustrated with the three-year-old war and the lack of progress toward a peace deal. Following a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and later talks with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump said Friday he was weighing options ranging from new sanctions and tariffs on Moscow to disengaging from the process altogether.

“I’m going to make a decision as to what we do … whether or not it’s massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both, or we do nothing and say it’s your fight,” Trump said.

Trump had also sought a direct meeting between Putin and Zelensky, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told NBC there was “no agenda” in place and no summit planned.

According to the Journal, an approval process at the Pentagon has prevented Kyiv from launching deep strikes into Russian territory with ATACMS, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth holding final authority over their use.

Neither Kyiv, the White House, nor the Pentagon immediately responded to requests for comment.
