BCCI Quashes Rumours of Farewell Series for Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Ahead of Australia ODIs

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma find themselves at pivotal points in their careers. Having retired from T20Is after last year’s World Cup triumph and from Tests in May, the two batting greats are now preparing for India’s three-match ODI series in Australia this October.

Speculation over their future has intensified, with a recent Dainik Jagran report suggesting the tour could mark their India swansong, potentially casting doubt on their availability for the 2027 World Cup. By then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit 41, raising questions about longevity and fitness. Both, however, have stated ambitions to push for the tournament.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has moved quickly to dismiss talk of a farewell series. Vice-president Rajeev Shukla said there were no such plans and stressed that decisions on retirement lie solely with the players.

“When did they retire? Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will both play one-dayers. So, if they are playing, why are you worried about a farewell series?” Shukla said on the Two Sloggers Podcast. He added, “Our policy is very clear — a player himself makes that call. We respect that.”

India’s ODI series against Australia is scheduled for October 19, 23, and 25 in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney.
