Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was slapped by a man during a public hearing (Jan Sunvai) at her Civil Lines residence on Wednesday, officials said. The assailant has been detained and taken to the Civil Lines Police Station.

According to officials, the man—believed to be in his 30s—approached Gupta while she was listening to citizens’ grievances. After handing her a piece of paper, he began shouting, used expletives, and suddenly struck her. Security personnel overpowered him immediately. The motive is not yet clear.

Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva condemned the incident, calling it an “attack” on the chief minister and demanding a police inquiry. The party’s initial statement had described it as a “mishap.”

Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav also called the attack “very unfortunate,” adding that it raised questions about women’s safety. “If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or woman be safe?” he asked.

A witness, Anjali, told ANI: “The person was speaking and he suddenly slapped her… Police have taken him away.”

Jan Sunvai is a weekly initiative by the Delhi government that allows citizens to directly present their complaints to the chief minister.
