Gill’s Asia Cup Captaincy Buzz Quashed; Suryakumar Likely to Lead T20I Side

Speculation over Shubman Gill’s return to the T20I side as captain for the upcoming Asia Cup has been put to rest, with fresh reports indicating that the BCCI selection committee is set to retain Suryakumar Yadav as skipper. The tournament begins September 9 in the UAE.

According to the Times of India, the squad will be finalised at a selection meeting in Mumbai on August 19, followed by a press conference by chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Suryakumar, currently recovering from sports hernia surgery at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, is expected to attend the meeting. He has already resumed net training.

Gill’s leadership prospects gained traction after he led India’s Test side to a 2-2 draw in England, scoring a record 754 runs in 10 innings. However, selectors are expected to persist with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, casting doubt on Gill’s inclusion in the squad altogether.

The report also suggests Yashasvi Jaiswal will be rested to focus on red-ball cricket, while Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss out despite a strong IPL season earlier this year.
