Trump’s 25% Tariffs on India Take Effect as Deadline Passes, Additional Duties Coming August 27

As of August 7, President Donald Trump’s deadline for imposing reciprocal tariffs has officially taken effect in the United States, triggering a 25% duty on a range of Indian imports. The move follows Trump’s announcement last week targeting nearly 70 countries under a sweeping trade policy overhaul.

Trump celebrated the moment on his social media platform, Truth Social, writing: “IT’S MIDNIGHT!! BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN TARIFFS ARE NOW FLOWING INTO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!” He also claimed that the money would come from countries that had “taken advantage” of the U.S. for years.

In a previous post, the president warned that “the only thing that can stop America’s greatness would be a radical left court that wants to see our country fail.”

The 25% tariffs on Indian goods were justified by Trump on the grounds of what he called India’s “far too high” tariffs and restrictive trade barriers. He also pointed to India’s continued purchase of Russian military and energy equipment as a factor, warning of further penalties tied to those transactions.

Days after the initial announcement, Trump escalated his trade stance further by unveiling an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports—bringing the total to 50%—set to take effect on August 27.

The tariff escalation marks a significant development in U.S.-India trade relations, with economic and diplomatic implications expected to unfold in the coming weeks.
