‘Take a Chill Pill’: Sanjay Manjrekar Lightly Teases Gautam Gambhir Over Press Conference Reactions
Former cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar took a light-hearted jab at India head coach Gautam Gambhir, urging him to be more relaxed during press conferences — especially when responding to criticism about players like Shubman Gill.
After India’s fourth Test match, Gambhir came out strongly in support of Gill, defending the young captain from growing criticism. Responding to those who had questioned Gill’s readiness for leadership and his red-ball credentials, Gambhir delivered a fiery statement:
“No one has any doubt in Shubman Gill’s talent. Those who did, don’t know cricket — they can only talk. Some players need time to blossom in international cricket… Honestly, even if he didn’t perform, no one would’ve pointed fingers in the dressing room. He’s living up to his talent and captaincy expectations. And this whole ‘captaincy pressure’ thing — you don’t see it when he bats.”
Gill, who faced scrutiny prior to the series, silenced his doubters with a stellar performance — scoring over 700 runs as captain. But according to Manjrekar, questions about Gill’s role seemed to visibly irritate Gambhir.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Manjrekar remarked:
“Gambhir’s always been like that. Some questions get under his skin — especially when it comes to doubting Shubman Gill as a captain or batter. But those doubts are valid. Even people who understand cricket have wondered whether it was the right time for him to lead.”
Manjrekar emphasized that such questions aren’t personal attacks but part of the broader cricketing discourse, adding:
“I hope Gambhir realises that it’s not ‘you guys’ vs ‘us’. We’re all part of the same ecosystem. Everyone wants the best for Indian cricket.”
In a good-natured nudge, Manjrekar suggested that Gambhir lighten up when handling media queries:
“I’d like to see him take a chill pill sometimes. Just take it easy and encourage tough questions — not take them too personally. That’s something I hope he develops over time.”
As India celebrates a successful series and the emergence of Gill as a capable leader, Manjrekar’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of balancing passion with perspective — even in high-pressure roles like that of the national coach.
