Fake Embassy Busted: How Ghaziabad Man Ran ‘Westarctica Mission’ for Nearly a Decade
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly operating a fake embassy of the self-declared “micronation” Westarctica from a rented house in Ghaziabad’s Kavi Nagar locality.
The accused, Harshvardhan Jain, claimed to be a diplomat representing not just Westarctica—a non-recognized entity based in western Antarctica—but also several other self-styled micronations such as Seborga, Ladonia, and the fictitious “Poulvia.”
According to ADG (Law & Order) Amitabh Yash, Jain had converted his upscale residence into a mock consulate, hoisting various national flags and driving around in luxury vehicles with fraudulent diplomatic number plates.
How the Scheme Worked
Police said Jain had posed as an “honorary consul” of Westarctica since 2016 and an advisor to Seborga from 2012. He allegedly used his bogus diplomatic status to dupe businessmen and facilitate hawala transactions. The operation included:
-
₹44.7 lakh in cash and foreign currency worth about ₹30 lakh
-
Four high-end vehicles, including an Audi and Mercedes, with fake diplomatic plates
-
20 counterfeit VIP number plates, 12 fake passports, 34 country stamps, and two PAN cards
-
12 premium watches, a laptop, mobile phone, and other forged documents
Fake Embassy Since 2016
Jain initially ran his fake embassy from his father’s house in the same neighborhood. He shifted to a new rented residence five months ago, paying ₹1.8 lakh a month. His wife and minor son lived with him, while his father stayed at the earlier location.
Caught After Central Agency Tip-Off
The Special Task Force (STF) of UP Police acted on multiple tips, including one from a central agency. The FIR, filed by STF sub-inspector Sachin Kumar, noted that Jain had been seen driving cars with diplomatic insignias and flying flags of foreign nations—raising red flags.
“When asked to verify his diplomatic claims, Jain admitted to running the setup to scam businessmen and launder money,” said ASP (Noida STF) Raj Kumar Mishra.
Violation of National Sovereignty
Officials confirmed that India does not recognize micronations, and no foreign mission can operate without clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs. Jain was produced in court on Wednesday and sent to 14 days of judicial custody.
