Multiple Feared Trapped After Building Collapses in Delhi’s Seelampur; Rescue Efforts Underway
Several people are feared trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Seelampur area on Saturday morning, according to officials from the Fire Department. At least three to four individuals have been rescued and hospitalized so far, while rescue operations continue amid concerns that more may be buried under the debris.
A video shared by news agency ANI showed local residents assisting first responders in clearing rubble and aiding in rescue efforts. Seven fire tenders have been deployed to the site, and multiple emergency teams are working at the scene.
“We received a call about the collapse at 7 am. Multiple units, including seven fire engines, are on the ground. Further details are awaited,” a police officer told PTI.
The collapse comes just a day after another structural disaster in North Delhi’s Azad Market area, where a 45-year-old man died early Friday when three aging commercial buildings collapsed near a Delhi Metro tunneling site.
That incident, which occurred around 2 am in the Pul Mithai area, took place within the “influence zone” of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg corridor project. The DMRC has since announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the victim’s family, adding that the building owners had previously been warned of structural risks and advised to evacuate.
The Friday collapse involved two four-storey buildings and one three-storey structure, all roughly 30 years old and used as commercial warehouses for canvas and bag materials. Fortunately, most workers had left for the day, with only one person present when the buildings gave way. A truck parked nearby was also destroyed.
Authorities are continuing to investigate both incidents, which have raised renewed concerns over aging infrastructure and construction-related vulnerabilities across the capital.
