Nirmala Sitharaman, D Purandeswari Among Frontrunners for BJP President Post

3

JP Nadda has held the post of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president since 2020. Although his term officially ended in 2023, the party extended it until 2024 to ensure continuity during the crucial Lok Sabha elections.

With the elections now behind, speculation is mounting over who will take over the party’s top post. According to sources cited by Live Hindustan, the BJP may be poised to appoint its first-ever woman president—a significant political move ahead of upcoming state polls and internal restructuring.

Top Contenders

Nirmala Sitharaman

Currently serving as the Union Finance Minister since 2019, Sitharaman is seen as one of the strongest contenders. Her influence within the party, administrative experience, and southern roots—especially in Tamil Nadu—could bolster the BJP’s outreach in the region. She recently met with JP Nadda and BJP General Secretary BL Santhosh at party headquarters, further fueling speculation.

D. Purandeswari

A seasoned leader and the former Andhra Pradesh BJP chief, D. Purandeswari has also emerged as a key contender. She played a notable role in Operation Sindoor, a government initiative to promote India’s anti-terror stance across Europe, including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, and the EU.

Vanathi Srinivasan

Currently serving as the National President of BJP Mahila Morcha, Vanathi Srinivasan rose to prominence after defeating actor-politician Kamal Haasan in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Coimbatore (South). A long-time party worker since 1993, she became a member of the BJP’s Central Election Committee in 2022.

Why a Woman President Now?

Party insiders believe that appointing a woman to the top post aligns with the BJP’s recent focus on empowering women—both as leaders and voters. The party has seen growing support among women in recent elections, and naming a woman president could strengthen that trend.

The move would also be symbolic in light of the Women’s Reservation Bill, passed in 2023, which guarantees 33% representation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Appointing a female party president would send a strong message that the BJP is backing that commitment with action.
