Bayern Munich Crush Auckland City 10-0 in Club World Cup Opener, Set New Record Victory Margin

Few expected New Zealand’s semi-professional side Auckland City FC to match Bayern Munich in their FIFA Club World Cup opener — but the result turned out even worse than anticipated. The German giants handed the Kiwis a brutal 10-0 defeat at Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium, setting a new record for the largest margin of victory in the tournament’s history.

Facing a team made up of part-time players and missing their head coach Paul Posa, Auckland City were overwhelmed from the start. Bayern struck six times in the first half and added four more after the break. The previous record margin in the Club World Cup was Al Hilal’s 6-1 win over Al Jazira in 2022 — a figure Bayern comfortably eclipsed.

Bayern in Cruise Control

Kingsley Coman opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a header and netted again before halftime. Michael Olise also grabbed a first-half brace. Substitute Jamal Musiala made a huge impact, scoring a 17-minute hat-trick after coming on in the second half. Thomas Müller added his second goal late in the 89th minute, while Sacha Boey also got on the scoresheet.

Remarkably, Bayern’s star striker Harry Kane didn’t contribute to the tally, giving Auckland at least one minor consolation in an otherwise humbling night.

Tough Outing for Auckland, but a Financial Win

Without a full-strength squad and playing during their off-season, Auckland City were always up against it. The team’s entire squad is valued at under €5 million, compared to Bayern’s estimated €900 million. Still, Auckland’s participation as Oceania’s representative earns them £2.6 million in prize money — more than four times their total revenue last season.

With upcoming matches against Portuguese powerhouse SL Benfica and Argentine giants Boca Juniors, Auckland will be hoping to put in a more competitive showing, even if a win remains a long shot.
