The World Bank Group’s Managing Director, Wencai Zhang, today praised the institution’s Global Delivery Centre in Chennai, hailing it as a hub of operational excellence and innovation that is playing a pivotal role in supporting the Bank’s global development goals.
During his official visit to the Chennai facility, Zhang emphasized the centre’s critical function in streamlining back-end operations, technology services, finance, human resources, and administrative processes for the World Bank’s international operations. He noted that the centre is a testament to the World Bank Group’s commitment to efficiency, transparency, and global outreach.
“The Chennai centre is not just a support facility. It’s a powerhouse of innovation and performance that enhances our ability to deliver impact where it matters most — in the field,” said Wencai Zhang.
Established in 2001, the World Bank’s Chennai office has grown significantly over the years and now supports more than 150 countries with a staff of over 1,200 professionals. It serves as one of two key Global Delivery Centres — the other located in Sofia, Bulgaria — that help ensure around-the-clock service delivery for the organization.
Highlighting India’s growing importance as a partner in development, Zhang said the Chennai facility also reflects the broader strategic partnership between the World Bank and India. He added that the centre is a symbol of South-South cooperation, contributing not only to the Bank’s internal systems but also serving as a model of best practices for other international institutions.
Zhang met with staff at the facility, interacted with senior management, and reviewed the centre’s contributions to digital transformation, financial controls, procurement processes, and data management. He commended the employees for their professionalism, expertise, and dedication to the Bank’s mission of ending poverty and boosting shared prosperity.
In recent years, the Chennai centre has introduced several process automation tools and digital innovations that have been adopted across the World Bank Group. These innovations have reduced turnaround times, improved service accuracy, and enhanced transparency — particularly in areas like disbursements and procurement monitoring.
Local leaders and officials also welcomed Zhang’s visit, noting the World Bank’s long-standing contribution to India’s development story and its growing footprint in Tamil Nadu. Zhang reaffirmed the World Bank Group’s continued commitment to investing in operational infrastructure and capacity-building in the Global South.
His visit also comes at a time when India and the World Bank are collaborating on multiple development projects spanning clean energy, urban development, rural infrastructure, and financial inclusion.
