Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru Rain Update: The sudden monsoon rainfall and thunderstorms are affecting India, driven by a strengthening weather system over the Arabian Sea.

The combination of heavy rainfall in Maharashtra, Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru and strong winds has led to travel advisories from major airlines such as Air India and IndiGo. Here’s everything you need to know about the current weather situation and its impact on air travel.

Cities like Pune, Bengaluru, several districts in Maharashtra, and Guwahati have experienced heavy rainfall recently. While this has brought some much-needed relief from the intense summer heat, it has also caused a number of problems. The heavy showers have led to traffic jams, localised flooding in various areas, and interruptions in power supply too.

IndiGo also informed passengers that their flights might be delayed due to the weather. The airline recommended that travellers check the status of their flights to and from Mumbai before heading to the airport.

Monsoon Arrival In Mumbai, Bengaluru, And Maharashtra

On the evening of May 20, 2025, a sudden thunderstorm hit Mumbai and the surrounding areas. While the rain brought a welcome break from the intense heat, it caused disruptions in traffic and the suburban railway network.

Heavy rain affected many parts of the city, including Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Andheri, and Bandra, while the eastern suburbs saw lighter to moderate showers. Before the rain arrived, there was a dust storm, followed by strong gusty winds.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the current spell of heavy rain is not over yet. Fresh weather alerts have been issued for South Peninsular India, Maharashtra, and now Gujarat, as the weather system is expected to strengthen in the coming days.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has reported the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea, just off the Karnataka coast.

The IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts for several districts, warning that similar weather conditions are likely to continue for the next four days, starting from Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
