₹30,000 Crore Estate Dispute: Sunjay Kapur’s Sister Slams Treatment of Mother, Family

The battle over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s ₹30,000-crore estate is growing increasingly bitter, drawing in his widow Priya Sachdev, former wife and actor Karisma Kapoor, and now his sister Mandhira Kapur, who has broken her silence on the turmoil.

Mandhira defends her mother
Speaking to NDTV, Mandhira condemned the treatment meted out to her 80-year-old mother, Rani Kapur, calling the situation “nothing short of a nightmare.”

“I think it’s a little harsh on my mom to send her this letter saying she has nothing to do with the company she built. She’s 80. How about just respecting the fact that her husband and she made this? This is the legacy my father built. Today, we’re being told we are not allowed to have it,” she said.

Mandhira also reacted to Priya Sachdev’s suggestion that Rani move into the family’s Delhi home, saying her mother was not emotionally ready. “It is very tough for mum even to go to that house. After dad died, she could barely handle it. Now with her son gone, it’s impossible. Our life has been one big shock. It feels like a nightmare we want to wake up from.”

In a separate interview with ANI, Mandhira accused the family of sidelining her mother despite her role in building the business alongside her late husband. “We are treated like strangers and outsiders. We were not even included in the obituary. You can try to take it away from us, but it’s in our blood,” she said.

Rani Kapur’s complaint
The feud intensified after Rani described her son’s death in London as “mysterious” and filed a criminal complaint with UK authorities seeking a probe. She has also alleged coercion into signing documents and financial restrictions, while questioning the handling of the company’s legacy.

Sona Comstar, however, has rejected her claims, stating she has had no role in the company since 2019 and serving her a legal notice over “false” allegations.

About Sunjay Kapur’s death
Sunjay Kapur, chairman of Sona Comstar, died on June 12 during a polo match in England. The company attributed the death to a heart attack. His friend and business associate Suhel Seth told ANI that the heart attack occurred after he “apparently swallowed a bee” mid-match.

Sunjay was married three times. He wed fashion designer Nandita Mahtani in 1996, followed by actor Karisma Kapoor in 2003, with whom he had two children, Samaira (19) and Kiaan (13). After their divorce in 2016, he married Priya Sachdev in 2017. They have a son, Azarias.
