Powerful Earthquake Near Cuba Sends Tremors Across Caribbean and US

A rare and powerful earthquake struck off Cuba’s northwest coast on Monday, sending tremors across parts of Cuba, Mexico and Florida in a region not typically known for strong seismic activity.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake measured magnitude 6.1 and occurred at a shallow depth of 26 kilometres (16 miles). Its epicentre was located about 104 kilometres west-northwest of Mantua in western Cuba, a few hours from Havana.

Seismologists described the event as highly unusual. Unlike most major earthquakes, which occur along tectonic plate boundaries, this quake struck within a tectonic plate—an area where seismic activity is generally less frequent and more dispersed. USGS experts noted that no earthquake of similar strength had occurred within 322 kilometres (200 miles) of the area since an estimated magnitude 6.0 quake near San Cristóbal, Cuba, in 1880.

There were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. However, the tremor heightened concerns in Cuba, where years of economic hardship have left many buildings vulnerable and infrastructure strained. Widespread power outages in parts of the country also complicated communication efforts.

Residents described scenes of panic as the ground shook. In western Cuba, people rushed outdoors as buildings trembled, with many saying they had never experienced such a powerful quake before.

The earthquake was also felt beyond Cuba. In Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, residents in popular tourist destinations including Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum reported shaking, prompting evacuations from offices and other buildings. Authorities in the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo activated emergency protocols but said no damage had been reported.

Tremors were likewise felt in parts of Florida, according to USGS reports.

Despite the strength of the quake, the U.S. National Weather Service said no tsunami watch or warning was issued.
